Stangl Marbled Ceramic Ashtray Dave Thomas Vintage

In 1954, Dave Thomas at Stangl designed a number of cigarette related pieces.  This ashtray is one of those pieces.  He created the marbled swirling design in the clay body, a design that was short lived.  It is a bit of modern art from the 1950s.  There are blues, whites and slate grays in this piece.  The glaze is clear.  All of the color is in the clay body.  This ashtray is about 3 inches across.

Stangl Ceramic Yellow Creamer Pottery Vintage

This yellow Stangl pottery creamer is not marked, as with many Stangl pieces.  However, it is in very nice condition and would make a nice addition to any Stangl collection.  This is a classic Stangl design and color.  I do not have any matching pieces.

Christmas Angel Ceramic Figure Germany Vintage

It is hard to tell what this angel is made of.  He has a slight glazed finish, but rings as a slight thud when tapped; there is crazing.  The bottom seems to be sealed with a type of paper or mat, and then painted.  Alas, the hand is broken and the arm and head are glued back on.  This is a very old piece made in Germany.  An ink stamp on the bottom says "Germany".  I assume this is a very early Christmas piece.  This angel stands about 5.5 inches tall and is likely hard to find because it is so fragile.  Perhaps Papier-mâché.

Monkey Pottery Head Seed Starter Chia Pet Vintage

Before there were Chia Pets, there were seed starters.  These things have been around for a long time.  This is a circus monkey's head pottery piece and it has been used to start seed; no doubt a fuzzy top for the monkey.  The face paint is intact and this piece is in nice condition, albeit used.  There are no markings on the bottom.  This monkey head seed starters are hard to come by; a rare find.  He stands a bit more than 5 inches tall.

Stangl Rose Bloom Vase Dave Thomas 1954 Vintage

This rose vase by Stangl was quite a find.  In 1954, Dave Thomas designed some cigarette related ceramics with a marbled swirl design to the clay body in several colors.  This is not a cigarette related piece, but it clearly has the same swirl to the clay.  The modern art splattered paint design, reminiscent of Jackson Pollock (who died in 1956) is in the glaze.  Again, the grey and white swirled effect is in the clay body while the splatters are in the glaze.  This is an exceptional piece and may well be one of a kind.  There are no markings on the bottom, which Stangl is known for.  A little research will lead one to Stangl.  This piece must have sat on a mantle as I had to wash off years of yellow film. A rare find.  This vase is about 5 inches tall.

Rooster Chicken Ceramic Pepper Shaker Vintage

Another solitary pepper shaker on my shelf.  This is a ceramic rooster.  The red paint on the cockscomb is a bit washed and there are a few dings here and there.  There is no cork in the bottom nor any mark.  Someone has penciled numbers on the bottom 6511 perhaps.  He is about 3 inches tall.

Hephaestus 1989 Horseshoe Nail Figure Brass

This metal sculpture is from 1989.  The base is a heavy piece of quality brass.  The cane is of brass wire.  The rest of the figure is made of iron nails and is painted black and gold.  On the bottom, the artist used an electric engraving pen to mark "Hephaestus 1989."  I do not know if that is the name of the piece or the name of the artist.  Regardless, Hephaestus is the god of the forge and smithy work to the ancient Greeks and Romans, where he is known as Vulcan.  This figure is about 6 inches tall.

Anri Madonna Mary Jesus Italy Wood Carved Vintage

This is an exceptional Anri hand carved, hand painted figurine of the Madonna; Mary and Jesus.  It was made in Italy.  The Anri company began in 1912.  This is an early piece and is hand carved from wood and delicately hand painted.  The cut off turning spindle is seen on the bottom along with two heat brands burned into the base.  There are also two ink stamped marks, including the Anri mark.  One familiar with the Anri marks would likely be able to tell who did the carving.  This figure is about 5.5 inches tall.

Black Pig Fiddle Ceramic Figurine Vintage

This is a small ceramic figure of a pig playing a violin.  It is newer than other items I have, but he is cute and simple.  At first I thought the detailing was cold paint, but on closer examination, the red and white are as shiny as the rest of the glaze; so he is not as old as I first thought.  The Japan label is still on the bottom and he is likely from the 1970s or 1980s.  He is about 3.5 inches tall.

Bald Man Ceramic Pepper Shaker Salt Japan Vintage

This is a vintage ceramic pepper shaker.  I do not have the matching salt shaker.  Regardless, he fits in nicely with the collection of figures I have.  He is a little bald guy smoking a cigar.  The cork in the bottom appears to have never been removed.  The bottom is marked Japan in red as a part of the glaze. This little guy is about 3.25 inches tall and in nice condition.

Fitz Floyd Love Cube Block Paperweight 1970s FF

This Fitz and Floyd ceramic paperweight has some nice heft to it.  It is classic 1970s décor.  Four sides have a single letter, L O V E, and the top has the full word Love.  The condition is very nice.  The FF label is on the bottom; made in Japan.  The block is 2.5 inches across each side.

Pewter Soup Spoon Ladle Germany Vintage

This is a vintage pewter spoon.  It is stamped Germany.  I can find no other stamps or marks.  It is a very light weight spoon and has a distinct thud sound when tapped.  There is a small tear in the metal in the scoop part of the spoon and the surface of the spoon is discolored.  This is a old spoon, it may qualify as an antique.  I do not know if it is a soup spoon or a small ladle.

Ceramic Cat Pincushion Made in Japan Vintage

This is a small ceramic cat pincushion, Made In Japan.  It is fairly old and needs a little cleaning.  I found it at a local estate sale.  It does not seem to have any dings, though the glaze was painted on a little coarsely and white shows through the blue base.  The cushion is of some type of foam and appears to be original  There are a few old pins I left in.  This ceramic cat is about 2.5 inches tall.

Tutor Plate Butter Knife Small Vintage

This is a simple small silver plate knife I found in a bin of miscellaneous flatware at an estate sale. It is marked "Tutor Plate" with no other marks. It has an "R" monogram. I have a holder full of unique bits of silver flatware in my kitchen as I like to use silverware, and I like the diversity. This knife is 7 inches long.

Newsboy Cap Wool Clarksville TN Tots Teens Shop Vintage

This is a vintage Newsboy Cap.  I found it in an estate sale near Elkton, KY.  It is a child's size medium wool cap.  I do not know how old it is, but imagine pre-1950, if not as early as the 1920s.  It is perfect for a vintage clothing collection or for use in theater as a period costume piece.  In the lining there is a crest along with the text: "Made Expressly for Tots-Teens Shop, Clarksville Tenn."  There are little nibbles in the wool as it was stuffed in the bottom of a box of old handmade baby clothing, in the back of a closet.
