This rose vase by Stangl was quite a find. In 1954, Dave Thomas designed some cigarette
related ceramics with a marbled swirl design to the clay body in several
colors. This is not a cigarette related
piece, but it clearly has the same swirl to the clay. The modern art splattered paint design,
reminiscent of Jackson Pollock (who died in 1956) is in the glaze. Again, the grey and white swirled effect is
in the clay body while the splatters are in the glaze. This is an exceptional piece and may well be
one of a kind. There are no markings on
the bottom, which Stangl is known for. A
little research will lead one to Stangl.
This piece must have sat on a mantle as I had to wash off years of
yellow film. A rare find. This vase is
about 5 inches tall.
This is simply an unexpected piece. I am not an expert on Stangl, still my feeling is that this is a unique piece. The drip painting clearly speaks to this.
